3 Fun Facts About Tarpon

Table of Contents

Tarpon season is here at last!

There’s nothing like feeling a giant at the end of your line and battling it out right there in the boat. If you yearn for adventure and you can’t turn away from a good fight, then you’ll love tarpon fishing in Clearwater. At Yachtfish.com, we provide a variety of incredible fishing charters all over Florida, and tarpon fishing with our experts is an experience that should not be missed. To celebrate the start of another tarpon fishing season, we’ve come up with these fun facts about tarpon:

#1. A tarpon may be the biggest fish you’ll ever catch.

Most people are well aware of the fact that tarpons are big fish, but not many people appreciate just how big they can get. Tarpons can grow anywhere from four to eight feet long, and they can weigh anywhere from 60 to 280 pounds! The scientific name for Atlantic tarpon is Megalops atlanticus, which seems fitting when you know just how big they can get.

#2. Tarpons are fighters.

If you are looking for a relaxing day out on the boat, tarpon fishing may not be the ideal sport for you. Tarpons will make you work to reel them in, and they are known for somersaulting and jumping to free themselves. It’s the fight just as much as the size that makes them the ideal target for fishermen and women looking for a challenge.

#3. Tarpons can live for years.

Most people don’t think of fish as living very long lives, but female tarpons can live for over 50 years and smaller males typically live for around 30 years. The oldest recorded tarpon living in captivity lived for 63 years!
